Telephone Scammers Posing as Government Agencies with Forged Caller ID http://putnamsheriff.org/blog-32-telephone-scammers-posing-as-government-agencies-with-forged-caller-id The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office has received several new reports of a telephone scam that involves people identifying themselves as some government agency such as the Internal Revenue Service or as law enforcement. The scammers are using a telephone service that allows them to choose how they are identified by caller ID so it may appear on your telephone as if they are with the agency they claim to be. The individual will telephone the victim and demand payment of money to avoid a penalty or perhaps even to avoid being arrested. The victim is then instructed to purchase a green dot card for a specified amount and to pay the money over the telephone using the green card.

Please be aware this is a scam! No government agency or law enforcement agency will contact anyone in this manner and demand money. If you are contacted by anyone demanding money who says they are a law enforcement officer or with some other government agency, please do not pay them anything. If you have already fallen victim to this scam, please report it to the law enforcement agency in your local jurisdiction.

Fourteen Arrested after Eight Month Long Methamphetamine Investigation in Interlachen Area http://putnamsheriff.org/blog-28-fourteen-arrested-after-eight-month-long-methamphetamine-investigation-in-interlachen-area Interlachen, FL: Beginning at approximately 6:00 am this morning (Friday June 27, 2014) fourteen suspects were arrested by Putnam County Sheriff’s Deputies following an eight month investigation into the manufacture of methamphetamine in western Putnam County.
The investigation was initiated and coordinated by Lieutenant George Traber. At the time the investigation began, Lt. Traber was the Assistant West District Commander. Lt. Traber is currently the Property Crimes Unit supervisor within the Criminal Investigation Bureau of the Sheriff’s Office. The investigation resulted in warrants being issued for 17 suspects, 13 of those and one additional suspect have been arrested on methamphetamine related charges at the time of this release. The initial investigation began in October of 2013 when deputies busted a methamphetamine cook at 205 Ellen Avenue in Interlachen. The subsequent investigation revealed that Donald McLaughlin was manufacturing methamphetamine for distribution in the Interlachen area and that he regularly conspired with the remaining suspects to obtain the needed chemicals to cook methamphetamine.

The State Attorney’s office assisted throughout the investigation and completed a review of all cases at the conclusion. Warrants charging the suspects with conspiracy to manufacture methamphetamine and conspiracy to possess listed chemicals were issued. Once the arrest warrants had been issued, the Sheriff’s Office Street Crimes Unit and Drug / Vice Unit began making the arrests.

During the search for the suspects, a methamphetamine lab was located at 146 Arrowhead Drive and finished product methamphetamine was located at 120 Paul Drive in Interlachen. Approximately one gram of methamphetamine, 86 grams of methamphetamine oil and numerous items of drug paraphernalia were seized during this operation. Danny Bishop, who was not part of the initial round-up, was charged with possession of methamphetamine. The Sheriff’s Office Methamphetamine Response Team responded to Arrowhead Drive to collect evidence and neutralize the volatile chemical processes associated with the manufacture of methamphetamine.

McLaughlin remains incarcerated in the Putnam County jail without bond. The remaining suspects have a bond of $10,008.00.

Today’s arrests were the result of a cooperative effort between the Sheriff’s Office, United States Drug Enforcement Administration Jacksonville District and the 7TH Judicial Circuit State Attorney’s Office.

Putnam County Code Enforcement Officers participated in the operations and ended up condemning the Arrowhead Drive and Paul Drive residences.

Sheriff Jeff Hardy said “The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office remains dedicated to hunting down those who manufacture methamphetamine and those who procure chemicals to be used in the manufacture process. This operation was a significant step in combating the manufacture of this highly addictive and very dangerous drug in the western part of our County”.

If you have any information regarding the location of the four suspects remaining at large (Jason Jeremiah Dhanraj 36, Kodiak Lee Spence 27, Shelly Marie Arthur 38, Jared Quinion Brown 29) or anyone involved in the suspected manufacture of methamphetamine you are encouraged to contact the Sheriff’s Office at 329-0801 or Crimestoppers at 1-888-277-8477 or westopcrime.com.

Father and Son Argument Escalates to Shooting http://putnamsheriff.org/blog-22-father-and-son-argument-escalates-to-shooting On June 3, 2014, at approximately 11:30 pm, the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a shooting at 128 Silver Beach Boulevard in Pomona Park. The initial investigation revealed that a father and his adult son engaged in a fight. The fight escalated and ultimately ended when the father retrieved a .22 caliber rifle and shot his son.

The father, Clay Jernigan, 53 YOA, stated he was asleep in bed when his son, Tyler Blair, 30 YOA, who also lives with him suddenly began yelling and screaming and banging on the walls. Jernigan stated he arose from bed to see what was going on and was confronted by his son who was irate. Blair had allegedly been drinking a large amount of tequila sometime prior to the shooting.

According to the police report, Blair began beating Jernigan and throwing him around the house. Jernigan suffered numerous bruises and scrapes and a shoulder injury. Blair allegedly walked away into the kitchen at some point during the attack. Jernigan took that opportunity to grab a .22 caliber rifle to defend himself from further attack.

Blair returned a few moments later and became violent again. Jernigan, acting out of fear, fired the weapon at Blair. This stopped Blair’s attack. Jernigan then rendered first aid and called 911.

Jernigan was transported by ambulance to Putnam Community Medical Center treatment. Blair was transported by air ambulance to Shands at UF for treatment. Both Blair and Jernigan were reported to be in stable condition with non-life threatening injuries at the time of this release.

The shooting investigation is ongoing at this time. Additional details regarding the investigation and potential criminal charges relating to the shooting will be released when they become available.

Telephone Scam Alert http://putnamsheriff.org/blog-20-telephone-scam-alert The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office has received reports of a telephone scam that involves people identifying themselves as Detectives with the Sheriff’s Office. The scammers are using a telephone service that allows them to choose how their phone call is identified by caller ID. Consequently, caller ID will show the scam call is coming from the Sheriff’s Office. The individual will telephone the victim, tell them they missed jury duty and a warrant has been issued for their arrest. The victim is then given the option of going to jail or going to Walgreens, CVS, or Winn Dixie and getting a green dot card for a specified amount and paying the money over the telephone using the green card.

Please be aware this is a scam! The Sheriff’s Office will not contact anyone in this manner concerning a warrant or accept “payment” over the telephone to avoid arrest. If you are contacted by anyone demanding money who says they are a law enforcement officer, please do not pay them anything and report it to the law enforcement agency in your local jurisdiction.

Federal Warrant Served in West Putnam http://putnamsheriff.org/blog-19-federal-warrant-served-in-west-putnam Lanorius GilmoreLanorius Gilmore was arrested Tuesday morning (5/20/2014) shortly after the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team and Rifle Security Team surrounded his home at 156 East Cowpen Lake Road, in western Putnam County.

Members of the Sheriff’s Office Drug and Vice Unit, including a detective assigned to the DEA Taskforce, had been investigating Gilmore for more then a year. Last week, a Federal Grand Jury indicted Gimore for sale of cocaine and early this morning investigative procedures confirmed Gilmore’s presence in the home. Because of Gimore’s known propensity for violence and history of being armed with an assault rifle, Sheriff Hardy assigned the Special Operations Group to the apprehension. With a search warrant in hand, Deputies surrounded the home in Hawthorne where Gilmore resided with other family members and ordered him to surrender. Gimore complied with the order to surrender and was taken into custody. Gimore was transported to the Federal Courthouse in Jacksonville.

A search of the home turned up eight grams of cocaine, narcotic painkillers, a small amount of marijuana and two guns. One of the guns, a Glock pistol, had been reported stolen by the University of Florida Police Department. Additional charges pertaining to the firearms and found drugs are pending.

Street Crimes/Drug Vice Units Record Sixteen Arrests http://putnamsheriff.org/blog-14-street-crimesdrug-vice-units-record-sixteen-arrests On Thursday April 17Th, The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office Street Crimes and Drug / Vice Units wrapped up a two week anti-drug and prostitution operation in various portions of Putnam County. The joint operation resulted in 16 individuals charged with various drug and prostitution related crimes.

The majority of the arrests occurred between State Road 207 and Kane Road along the Highway 17 South Corridor as deputies targeted prostitution and drug crimes in the area. The operation concentrated in this area after it became apparent to deputies that prostitution and drug crimes were increasing along the busy Highway 17 corridor.

The operation netted 12 prostitution arrests, all of which occurred in East Palatka, after men approached an undercover female deputy and offered to pay her for various sexual favors. In all of the arrests, only one suspect offered any resistance. Eligio Mendoza pulled into the Siesta Motel after he solicited the undercover deputy for sexual favors. As the arrest team moved in, Mendoza accelerated and nearly struck one of the deputies with the vehicle. Still refusing to stop, a vehicle pursuit ensued south on Highway 17 South. The pursuit ended when Mendoza’s vehicle came to a stop at Highway 17 and Horse Landing Road. Mendoza then fought with the deputies and refused to allow the deputies to handcuff him. Mendoza is currently being held in the Putnam County Jail without bond pending a hold placed on him Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
